about

Thomas Gaynor is a young organist from Wellington, New Zealand. This CD is a fundraising effort to financially support his graduate music studies abroad. This year, Thomas has completed his Masters degree at the Eastman School of Music with Professor David Higgs, and is preparing to begin his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the same institution.

As winner of the 2014 Fort Wayne National Organ Playing Competition, second place winner in the 2014 Miami International Organ Competition and the 2013 Arthur Poister Competition, and a finalist in the 2013 Longwood Gardens International Competition, Thomas is steadily making his mark on the American organ scene. Recent recital engagements have brought him to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., St Andrew’s RC Cathedral in Little Rock, Arkansas, and Slee Hall in Buffalo, New York, amongst others.

Thomas began his musical studies at the age of ten with piano lessons, moving on to organ at thirteen. He completed his Bachelor of Music in organ performance with first- class honours at the New Zealand School of Music under the tutelage of Douglas Mews. During this time he held the Richard Prothero Organ Scholarship at Wellington Cathedral of St. Paul, where he benefited greatly from the guidance of Michael Fulcher. As a piano student of Judith Clark, CNZM, he was awarded the LTCL diploma with distinction.

Thomas is very grateful for the significant support he has been given as a recipient of a Dame Malvina Major Foundation Arts Excellence Award, The Kiwi Music Scholarship, the Maxwell Fernie Trust Centenary Award, The Ian Pollard Organ Scholarship, and a Freemasons University Scholarship. Thomas would like to offer huge thanks to Ivan and Felicity Willis for their constant and generous support. He would also like to acknowledge, with grateful thanks, the ongoing support of contributors to the Thomas Gaynor Pipe Organ Study Trust, set up and managed by trustees Simon Chiaroni, Richard Prothero, and Robert Brace.
